Toward 10 Years: How Physicians Engage, Respond, and Behave in a Longitudinal Assessment from Multiple Perspectives

Implementing and sustaining a valid and effective longitudinal assessment system for active physicians requires collaboration across multiple departments within a medical specialty board. The American Board of Anesthesiology’s MOCA Minute assessment, now in its 10th year, has examined over 35,000 physicians. MOCA Minute is designed for physicians to answer 30 items a quarter, totaling 120 items annually. To promote this engagement, it relies on consistent messaging and reinforcement through diverse strategies and channels. Assessment policies and communication with physicians need to address physicians that do not follow this optimal pattern. Research indicates performance differences among those physicians who follow the optimal pattern compared to those who delay their engagement until the last quarter of the year.

This educational session will first outline the history, intention, and structure of MOCA Minute to highlight key features. Then illustrate how three departments - continuing certification, communications, and psychometrics - collaborate to understand diplomate behavior and improve assessment engagement. Presenters will also discuss how interactions with physicians have evolved over time in response to physician feedback and data-driven findings. Session participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and reflect on their experiences with longitudinal assessments at their own specialty boards.
