Promoting Professionalism through the ABMS Ethics and Professionalism Committee and the Member Boards

The ABMS Ethics and Professionalism Committee (EPCOM) launched the Promoting Professionalism Action Collaborative (PPAC) in 2024 to identify and develop resources, programs, and offerings that promote professionalism competencies in medical specialties. The effort began with the publication of the ABMS Promoting Professionalism Position Statement and then an in-person event attended by 12 Member Boards. During the daylong event, participants explored current assessment methods that are used in formative approaches to professionalism and developed work plans for professionalism competency activities. The work continued through a series of virtual meetings.

This session will explore the efforts over to accelerate the adoption of formative professionalism assessments in initial and continuing certification. Leaders from the ABMS will describe the structure and function of the learning community. Representatives of two specialties, American Board of Pathology and American Board of Family Medicine will discuss their experiences in PPAC and how it has impacted their efforts to promote professionalism in their specialties.
