Enhancing Wellbeing through Faculty Development Activities and System interventions

The rates of depression, anxiety, burnout and suicide in trainees and practicing physicians remain high (1). A lack of wellbeing can be associated with unprofessional behavior, decreased quality of patient care, increased errors, and negative outcomes. Interventions to decrease burnout and promote improved health and wellbeing amongst trainees/physicians can involve individual and system level interventions with best outcomes occurring when both are addressed. We engaged in a quality improvement process targeting professionalism, first using qualitative and quantitative methods to conduct needs assessment with residents and faculty. The data were used to design educational and system level programs. We will present the results of our portfolio project to date and engage the audience in discussions of how they might bring such a program to their institution.
